Series on Galatians

This is a series of 85 expository sermons that I preached on Paul’s letter to the Galatians, his treatise on the true bounds of Christian freedom. The series was preached in the evening over a 2 year period from 2005-2007. Paul’s letter to the Galatians is a defense of the doctrines of grace, and justification by faith alone in Christ; but it is in greater terms Paul’s charter of Christian liberty.

Galatians was Paul’s first letter ever written to the churches, and it is his most fiery and polemical in the defense of the Gospel in opposition to the Judaizers who sought to pervert the Gospel. It is written to the churches of Galatia as a formal declaration of the truth of the Gospel in opposition to Judaism, as well as a defense of his apostolic authority. Because of its defense of the gospel and Christian freedom, Galatians has been called many things: the Magna Charta of Christian liberty, the battle cry of the Reformation, or even the Christian declaration of independence. Paul’s letter to the Galatians is one of the most important books of the NT, being a summary of the Gospel, the doctrines of grace, and the true bounds of Christian freedom in the Christian life.

*John Brown said, “Paul’s letter to the Galatians is the charter of Evangelical faith and freedom. It is the apologia of the true gospel wherein the righteousness of Jesus Christ shines most excellent as the ground and basis for the salvation of sinners and the scope and source of the Christian’s life and liberty in service to God and one’s neighbor.”

What is wonderful about the book of Galatians is that it is just 6 chapters, and can be read in 10-15 minutes; and yet it contains a summary of Paul’s theology and an explanation of basic Christian doctrine. There are three parts to the book: History, Theology, and Ethics. In Ch.1-2 we have Paul’s defense of his apostolic authority. In Ch.3-4 we have Paul’s doctrine of justifying faith. And then in Ch.5-6 we have Paul’s declaration of the true bounds of Christian freedom.

The book of Galatians is rich in spiritual truth, powerful in argumentation, profound in theological depth, instructive in practical devotion, and encouraging in every way that is foundational to the Christian life. It shows us the glory of Christ, the perfect merit of His saving work, the fullness of God’s grace, the doctrine of justification by faith alone, the nature and bounds of Christian freedom, and the importance of walking in the Spirit and overcoming patterns of sin and idolatry and the works of the flesh in the Christian life. It is for this reason that Galatians has been one of the most treasured books in the Bible, and one of the most often studied, preached through, and commented upon by pastors and Biblical scholars throughout church history, especially during the Reformation. It is a defense of the doctrines of grace and in many ways a handbook on Biblical reformation. And this all derived from Paul’s theology and ministry and the defense of his apostolic authority.

*Martin Luther has said, “Paul’s design and argument here is to establish the doctrine of faith, grace, and freedom in Christ and thereby diligently instruct us, to comfort us, to hold us in the perfect knowledge of the true gospel and the most excellent truth and righteousness of Jesus Christ for our salvation.”

*Jonathan Edwards said, “Paul’s great design in writing his letter to the Galatians is to defend the true Gospel of Christ against the false Gospel of the Judaizers, and so to reclaim the churches of Galatia out from the foolish idolatry and false religion of the enemies of Christ and truth which held them captive; and is much like the false Gospel of the Papists and the Arminians of today.”
